An Open Letter To Governor Gboyega Oyetola On The Purported Postponement Of Osun State Local Government Election

By: Amb Akin Oladebo

20th Of August, 2020.

While I begin this piece with a generous mind to acknowledge all the efforts of our Mr Governor on the pro masses policies he and the entire cabinet have executed ever since they emerged as the working team to pilot the affairs of the state of the living spring. I equally need to raise eyebrow to all those anti masses policies you have ignorantly embarked upon since your arrival as the state governor of our dear state, it’s important to acknowledge from these two views because the evolution of your government is not based on popular mandate.

I feel so much honored today to write an open letter to sympathize with you on the decision of the state government under your watch to postpone the proposed local government election in Osun State. It appears to me that your government you claim that wants to set pace to solidify the spirit of democracy in the state is not intellectually empowered and capable to do so because of the sudden change of decision to jostle in constituting the caretaking government to run the affairs of the local government areas across the 30 Local Government Areas and the Area Office later in December of the year.

May I seize this great opportunity to remind you the idea of parliamentary democracy adopted by your predecessor is not only alien to the constitution but also a breach to the positions of the provisions of the constitution on local government system and governmental assignments in Nigerian fourth Republic 1999 constitution (as amended). This selfish step taken by your predecessor has been the greatest calamity that has befell our local government areas in the state from inception and the evolution of local government reforms in 1976 that empowered the local governments in taking the dividends of democracy to the people at the grassroots as the third tier of government in the country.

As a student of Government, Political Science and a practical student of modern politics. The logicality, rationality, constitutionality, legality and practicality of practising parliamentary system under the purview of the presidential system at the state and federal governments are still not known and well understood up till today if it’s not based on parochial interest. It appears the alien system adopted by your predecessor was meant for selfish interests and personal aggrandizement. It was generally believed when you proposed the local government election, all the lacuna and the flaws of this dubious system would be automatically removed and eradicated.

There is no gainsaying in telling the whole world that the reason for your postponement and constitution of caretaker committee in the state is not farfetched but because your government at all the 30 local government areas of the state has become unpopular even when this decision contravenes the positions of the Supreme Court recently held on the power acquisition to form the government at the micro level of local government. The idea of a continuity government to form a caretaker committee means the government is unpopular and not democratic, it centres on nepotism, dictatorship with the discretion of the state government. Hence there’s no room for proper accountability and effectiveness in the short term government proposed to run the affairs of our people at the grassroots.

In a deceitful efforts of the state to ensure the same structure that milked the state treasury are planted, you began to propose the election where your party was challenged by the opposition parties in ensuring that there is strict involvement in the process to give an end to maladministration in our local government areas across the state. Therefore, you came up with the idea of postponement which I forestalled or envisaged before the decision was made. All eyes on your administration towards the good governance of the the state before the coming gubernatorial election that will unseat you from the office of the Governor.

It’s incumbent on me as one of the most prepared aspirants in the forthcoming election to emphatically stress that the postponement of the election was never a surprise to me because I knew from the outset if you had conducted the election in million times, I would defeat the candidate from your party in a million way because of the poor political antecedents of your party and the electoral precedence in our local government which APC as a party has never won any free for all election since the beginning of the fourth republic in the history of Isokan local government. I am confident that your party’s doom and humiliation is not only postponed but also reserved till when the whole state would be taken by the opposition party to relieve the people of the state from the hardship inflicted by your party.

Yours in struggle as I submit tentatively till another time my voice would be heard on trivial issues like this that need critical attention towards the development of our dear state. I wish you best of luck till 2022 when you would be democratically removed as the next governor of the state.
